6 Ways Introverts Think Differently Than Everyone Else - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / 6 Ways Introverts Think Differently Than Everyone Else - Introvert Whisperer 6 Ways Introverts Think Differently Than Everyone Else Kayla Matthews October 15, 2019 Neuroscience No responses Go to top As an introvert, people tell you youre different from others, and you feel this difference in your daily interactions. Many introverts see this uniqueness as a good thing, but others get discouraged about fitting into a world favoring extroversion. Being the quiet type is far from a disadvantage, however. Your brain processes people, places and events in ways extroverts and ambiverts dont experience. Embrace your subdued nature â" it holds many fascinating components underneath its surface. Explore the reasons why introverts think differently with these six insightful facts. 1. Their Brains Process Neurotransmitters Differently Your internal reward system â" ruled by dopamine â" is different from an extroverts. Both of you produce the same amounts of dopamine, but the brains reward center is more active in extroverts. They feel accomplished and happy in community settings and receive gratification from successful social interactions. Introverts, on the other hand, receive less satisfaction from social interactions â" they get overwhelmed and want to look for the nearest quiet space. Extroverts revel in dopamine, while introverted people take pleasure from another neurotransmitter â" acetylcholine. This chemical causes you to turn inward for rewards. It helps you reflect and focus on individual tasks, which many introverts do through calming activities like reading or creating art. 2. They Overthink Because of Brain Pathways Scientists have suggested that when information enters an introverts brain, it travels a lengthier pathway than it would in an extroverts. Input travels along the long acetylcholine pathway, hitting up several areas â" including Brocas area, the left hippocampus and the frontal lobes. Brocas area controls speech and articulation, while the hippocampus places memories in long-term storage. Introverts take longer to make decisions and produce responses because theyre busy recalling old experiences. When information enters the long acetylcholine pathway, it undergoes a process of comparing and contrasting between past experiences. Your mind contains thousands of events, and this expanse overwhelms you with options. Because you have so many to pick from, you can spend a long time weighing all possibilities to get the preferred outcome. 3. They Learn by Thinking Instead of Doing Extroverts are likely to prefer an experiential learning style, which means they want to be hands-on. They volunteer for projects, clubs and local initiatives, and they learn from communicating with others. Many extroverted people learn best by applying learned concepts to real-world situations. Introverts prefer to retain knowledge through self-paced learning and analytical thinking. Overthinking can come into play here, but introverts long neural pathways also help them work through theories and ideas. Solo projects that forgo presentation or peer review allow introverts to express themselves without judgment and let their creativity reign. They prefer to brainstorm and consider all avenues before acting. 4. The Nervous System Plays a Role Introverted peoples bodies may utilize the parasympathetic nervous system more than the sympathetic nervous system. The PSNS decreases heart rate and blood pressure, relaxes your muscles and metabolizes food. Its like tucking in and going to sleep, or resting after a long day â" activities introverts love. The SNS controls the fight-or-flight mode humans feel when under stress or threat. It speeds up the heart rate and breathing, causes sweating and reduces the time needed to make decisions. These characteristics are what make extroverts so lively, optimistic and eager to accept new challenges. 5. Blood Flows Differently Within Their Brains In a 1999 study of 18 subjects, scientists discovered that introverted individuals experience higher rates of blood flow across their frontal lobes and anterior thalamus â" areas associated with problem-solving and decision making. Extroverted people had more blood flow across the posterior thalamus and insula, which interpret sensory data. Introverts favor contemplation over immediate action, while extroverts tend to be impulsive and willing to take risks. This study suggests that introversion and extroversion originate from biology rather than upbringing or environment. More research is needed to support this study, but it provides plenty of valuable insight in the meantime. 6. They Are More Sensitive to Stimuli Introverts pay a lot of attention to the outside world, even if theyre not actively engaged in it. If you have a conversation with someone in a coffee shop, you arent just focusing on them. Youre thinking about the person across the room tapping their fingers, the waitress walking to a nearby table or someone slurping their drink. High-stimuli environments pose a problem for you because your brain goes in a hundred directions. Thats why many introverts prefer low-stimuli situations. Theyre less stressful on the mind and provide fewer distractions to analyze. Extroverts fare better in high-stimuli environments, while quiet areas make them anxious and lonely. Take a Peek Inside Your Mind Now that you have an idea of how introversion works, youll find a renewed appreciation for your personality. It starts within the brain and makes you who you are. Ask an Admissions Expert Dr. Lucia Tyler
Ask an Admissions Expert Dr. Lucia Tyler Varsity Tutors brings you insider tips and advice straight from nationally recognized admissions experts. Dr. Lucia Tyler has worked in admissions at Cornell University providing counseling for applicants, giving admissions presentations, and eventually wrote a faculty admissions handbook. Additionally, she has held various professional roles in several areas of higher education at Cornell for over 15 years. Dr. Tyler is now the leader of her own college admissions consulting firm and has tutored, mentored, and advised numerous students over time. VT: How far ahead of time should a student begin working on his or her college application? Lucia: Ideally a student should begin working on their application in August because there is a lot of information to assemble on extracurricular activities etc. VT:What is the typical process an admissions officer goes through to evaluate applications? Lucia: It is hard to generalize since colleges do differ significantly. Colleges and universities must be sure initially that the applications they are processing are complete. Larger universities usually use some kind of mathematical formula involving grades and test scores to cut down on the number of applications requiring more personal attention. Applications to be read are then divided up among admissions personnel and sometimes faculty. The readers make recommendations to the admissions committee or director. The number of times an application is read varies. Many colleges have an admissions committee that meets to discuss and act on applications that are borderline admits. If the college does not make their admissions deposit target by May 1, they must go to their waitlist which involves a re- reading of applications. VT: What are the best ways to go about selecting a terrific essay topic? Lucia: Students should think about meaningful moments in their lives that changed their outlook, inspired them, made them stronger. VT:Are there any essay topics you get tired of seeing or would warn students to stay away from? Lucia: Students need to be careful about sports injury stories because they are very common. I would also avoid topics that are depressing throughout unless there are glimmers of light in the piece. VT: How important are grades and standardized test scores when admissions decisions are being made? Lucia: Good grades are important to all colleges. Standardized test scores are not considered at test optional colleges which number in the hundreds now. However, standardized test scores are very important at large universities that have to sift through tens of thousands of applications. VT:What is the biggest mistake a student can make on a college application? Lucia: One of the biggest mistakes a student can make is exaggerating or misrepresenting one of their activities or honors that will be reported by the school. Colleges want authentic applications from students. VT:What do you think is the single most important thing a student should make sure they present in the best possible way on their application? Lucia: The most important thing to present is their intellectual curiosity or strong academic interest. VT: Early-action, early-decision, binding/non-binding, regular decisions...With so many choices when applying, what do you recommend to students? Lucia: I always recommend applying to at least one early action school because there is no down side for the student. They get their application organized earlier, they hear back from the college earlier and it takes the pressure off of them if they are admitted to at least one college before New Years. VT: How should students go about determining the culture of a university, and whether they would be a good fit? Lucia: Students should visit the college when it is in session. There really is no other good way. VT: What tips do you have for students asking their teachers for letters of recommendation? Lucia: Students should think about classes they have done well in from their sophomore and junior year. They should choose two teachers from core subjects including math, science, English, social studies, and foreign language. Students should ask the teacher if they would give them a good recommendation. If the teacher agrees to recommend them, they should hand the teacher a written reminder of past projects, tutoring, extra credit work etc. Students who are applying for entrance to a conservatory or art school should ask for a recommendation in that discipline. Tips for Being Introverted in an Extroverted Work Environment - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / Tips for Being Introverted in an Extroverted Work Environment - Introvert Whisperer Tips for Being Introverted in an Extroverted Work Environment Working in an office has its benefits. As an introvert, I have difficulties staying focused in an upbeat work environment. It is a learning process to cope with a workspace that doesnt mesh with your personality type. Hopefully these tips can make life a little easier to be an introvert in an extroverted workplace. Find a Quiet Place Some offices have the luxury of a quiet room, or a place where people can go to work with a little less noise. Making use of that resource is important. If you do not have a quiet room it is important to find a space where you can step away and take a break for a moment. This will allow you to recover and refresh a little bit. This is also useful for processing and absorbing information after a meeting. I find that taking walks is a good way to get some fresh air, and help me wind down from the hectic office space. Plug In Bringing headphones or a headset to work is key. Even if you have trouble focusing while listening to music, cutting down surrounding sound can also be beneficial. Trying different genres of music that are softer or on a low volume can be helpful for dulling the noises around you. Change Desk Locations At my work, we do not have cubicles. Instead, we have desks arranged in blocks and groupings. You are always working directly next to coworkers. If you are in a similar position, moving to a desk that is against a wall or farther from people can be helpful. If you get distracted by movement then try to have a desk that is facing a wall. That way it limits distraction when people walk by your desk. Focus on Listening Introverts are typically good listeners. It is much easier for introverts to absorb information in quiet environments. I find that if you have a lot of meetings to go to it is helpful to listen rather than get worried about having to speak up. Being able to think about the meeting and reflect on it is more productive. Later you can discuss the topics of the meeting in a more comfortable environment. But Speak Up Also As an introvert you may not be inclined to be outwardly engaged in conversation, but if you have a good idea or a witty comment dont be afraid to speak up. Introverts have awesome and creative minds so it is good to let people know what you are thinking sometimes. If you know you need to talk during a meeting it is best to go over what you are saying. Plan on what you need to cover and try not to get too worked up about talking. Overall Do what makes you feel the most comfortable and productive. Being able to manage working in an extroverted workplace can be a useful skill for everyday life. We all see introverts and extroverts every day so understanding work style is beneficial to both personality types. A good balance is important and the creative introverted mind is never something to take for granted. Author bio: McKinley is a 22-year-old recent graduate from The College of Idaho. Conference call English vocabulary - Business English Common Phrases
Conference call English vocabulary - Business English Common Phrases Hi English Learning Students! I continue writing about business telephone conversation in English. Today lets look at conference call English vocabulary, specifically at common English phrases and words you might find useful when attending a conference call business meeting in English over the phone. Enjoyed this infographic? Here's what you can do next: How to Start a Conference Call The chairperson will usually start (kick off) the meeting with the following common expressions used in business English conversation:I would like to welcome everybody here today. Thanks for attending.Could you all when speaking state your name clearly? Please indicate (say) which office/department you represent so that the minutes are recorded properly. How to Ask for Clarification in a Conference Call Hearing somebody and understanding them are two entirely different issues. You might hear them clearly but not understand what they are talking about or because of noise and connection issues you might simply not hear all of the points they are making. Here are some common English phrases you can use for clarification during your conference call:Could you speak more slowly please?Could you repeat that again or could you repeat that last bit please?Could you speak up please (a little louder)?Could you explain that again? Or Could you explain that in laymanâs terms (non technicallanguage)?I didnât get that I am sorry could you say it again? How to Interrupt a Formal Conference Call It is OK to interrupt a formal telephone conversation in English if you wish to ask a question. You can interrupt by using any of the following phrases:Sorry, would you mind if I asked a question?Just to clarify are you saying thatCould I interrupt you for a minute?Would you mind if I jumped in there please? Can I stop you for just one minute please? As you can see these are all usually polite statements so should not upset any one. However, sometimes in a heated (angry) exchange (discussion) the politeness may disappear. Useful Phrases - Conference Call English Vocabulary At some point in the call it may be your turn to make a presentation. Assuming you are well prepared it should not be a problem. However, if English is not your native tongue (language) then a short clear presentation will help.Introduce yourself and tell them which department you represent.Start by telling them what are the key points you wish to coverAsk them to kindly hold questions until you are finished and that you will happily answer anyquestions then. Some useful English phrases to use in a business telephone conversation:I wonât keep you longI will keep this brief (short)Well, that is all I wanted to sayThat covers everything I had to sayNow, are there any questions?I am glad you asked thatThat is a really good questionLet me get back to you on that (I will give you a better answer later)Can you leave it with me? Ill find out and let you know.I think you might have misunderstood mePlease allow me to clarify it once more. When the conference call ends the chairperson will usually clarify some points and advise that minutes of the business meeting will be circulated later. Action points will be identified and persons responsible to follow up will be notified. The next meeting will take place: time and date to be agreed. Conference Call English Vocabulary
Is it Auditory Processing Disorder or ADHD
Is it Auditory Processing Disorder or ADHD Many kids with ADHD struggle to block out background noise, have a hard time staying focused when someone is talking to them, or forget the details of a conversation. In fact, difficulty staying focused and blocking out distractions are hallmark symptoms of ADHD. But did you know that they are also primary symptoms of Auditory Processing Disorder or APD? APD isnt as well-known as ADHD, and it isnt included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) of psychiatric disorders. However, it is widely recognized that many kids with ADHD or learning differences also struggle with auditory processing problems. APD can co-occur with ADHD or it can exist on its own. When ADHD and APD occur together, a childs difficulties with concentration and memory are magnified. What is Auditory Processing Disorder? Kids with APD have difficulty processing information that is presented to them orally. They dont have difficulty with hearing, although it may seem like they do at times. Instead, the problem lies in their brains ability to decipher and translate words and sentences into meaningful information. Kids with APD struggle to filter out background noise, focus on conversations (especially in noisy environments), remember the details of conversations, recall the order of instructions that are presented to them, correctly process sequences of numbers (e.g., 108 vs. 801), discriminate between similar sounding words (dig vs. big), and struggle to learn proper sentence structure and syntax. Since many aspects of language processing overlap in the brain, many kids with APD also struggle with components of reading and writing. How is Auditory Processing Disorder Different from ADHD? Many symptoms of APD overlap with symptoms of ADHD but there are significant differences between the two disorders as well. Kids with ADHD will have difficulty focusing or staying on task even when there are few distractions around them, and they will have difficulties in areas that are not related to attention and information processing (such as organizational skills, impulsivity, and/or hyperactivity). Kids with APD may be so sensitive to noisy environments that they have trouble tolerating them at all. They may even complain that the sound is hurting their ears, and become increasingly upset if they arent able to go to a quieter place. In contrast, many kids with ADHD enjoy noisy places. And while they may start having some behavior challenges if they become overstimulated, they usually arent distressed by the noise. When a child has ADHD as well as APD, their problems with focus and concentration become severely impairing in loud environments, and they are hypersensitive to sound . How is Auditory Processing Disorder Diagnosed? Unlike ADHD which can be diagnosed by a psychologist, psychiatrist, or pediatrician, APD can only be diagnosed by an audiologist. The audiologist administers a series of tests primarily designed to test a childs ability to process information within the context of increasing levels of background noise. The childs scores on the test are compared against the scores obtained from large samples of children without APD. If a childs score falls well outside of the average range of the comparison samples scores, the audiologist will likely make an APD diagnosis. How is Auditory Processing Disorder Treated? There is very limited research on treatments for APD, so it is difficult to know what will be most effective for any one child. Generally, interventions are provided by speech and language pathologists who help a child improve their ability to discriminate between similar sounds and remember the details and the sequences of information that they hear. In addition, to speech and language interventions, many children benefit from accommodations that minimize the impairments related to APD. This may include preferential classroom seating, taking exams in quiet rooms, having teachers and parents ask the child to repeat information back to them to check for understanding, and having information and key concepts presented in multiple formats (e.g., orally, written, video, etc.). While there is no cure for APD, many children do see large improvements in their auditory processing abilities as their brain matures over time. If you suspect that your child may have APD, talk to your childs teacher or special education coordinator, or request an audiology referral from your pediatrician. ABOUT DR.
